Inspiration for the Animator's Studio

Inspiration for the Lamplighter's World

CONTEXTUAL
INSPiRATION

The images below are sources of my inspiration for the studio of the animator character in the story. He is a hard working man and his animators table is his real home. This is reflected in the constant mess, scraps of paper, sketches, tools and storyboards which are constantly displayed around him. He spends so much time making these films alone, that he does not really have time to clean up around him. Here are some images that inspired me for his setting. The first image is a 2D animation made by 'mollyinmeguro'and the second is the real animation studio of Lotte Reiniger, pioneer of silhouette animation.

Below are inspirations for the lamplighter's animated world, a monochrome landscape of light, shadows and silhouette. The first image is the source of the story idea, while the others reflect how would animated scenes will be filmed. The video is a sequence from 'Cinderella' (1992) by animator Lotte Reiniger, while the last image is a still from Damien Chazelle's 2016 film, 'La La Land', which uses a short sequence of live action silhouette. Similar approaches will be taken when filming a scene where the real and animated worlds collide.

Inspiration for the Animator

Originally, the role of the animator was envisioned as an older master who as been making animations for decades, though this was changed to become a younger, sharper animator who wants to become a master in his later life. His stubble and unkempt hair reflect his hermit qualities, and his humble disposition lets him care more for his characters, rather than a bitter old artist who hates the world for not loving his art. Even though this younger artist doesn't have much, he is still hopeful in making more art that will eventually resonate with his audience. Below are potential actors who have played humble, yet charismatic artists, firstly John Cusack in Spike Jonze's 'Being John Malkovich' (1999), in which he also plays a poor puppeteer. Secondly Ryan Gosling, shown here in 'The Notebook' (2004), where he also displays some craft skills.

While the role of the animator won't be given to an older master, Pixar's 1999 animation 'Toy Story 2' has a great montage sequence of the master at work. The fades, camera movement and mix of shot lengths provides a wonder for the eyes.
